This article presents an overview of the natural gypsum resources in Mauritania. The country has enormous deposits of highly pure gypsum, located just 50km from a major deepwater port on the Atlantic Ocean, from where about 0.1Mt of gypsum was exported in 2017 to cement sector clients in West Africa. The article discusses the export potential for Mauritanian gypsum to the cement industry and other sectors in Sub-Saharan Africa, South America and the United States.

Cement manufacturing accounted for roughly 61% of the 252Mt of gypsum produced globally in 2015, with the gypsum wallboard sector consuming 33% of the total. Global gypsum demand is projected to increase by an average compound annual growth rate of 10% to reach 870Mt by 2026. Middle Eastern countries, India, China and countries in the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) will represent a major part of this increase in gypsum consumption.

The Russian Federation, established in 1991 following the downfall of the Soviet Union, is a semi-federal republic located in the north of Eurasia. The government rules 83 federal subjects comprising 47 oblasts, 21 republics, nine krais, four okrugs and two federal cities, from its base at the Kremlin in Moscow, Russia's capital city. As the largest country in the world, Russia spans 17,075,400km2 and had 143m inhabitants in 2012,1 making it the world's 10th most populous nation. The Russian gypsum industry has seen its fair share of market fluctuation thanks to multiple industrial and economic events that have overtly affected the construction industry. Here we give an overview of the industry as it stands today and its potential for the foreseeable future.
