US Gypsum production rises steadily in 2024

US: Gypsum producers mined 22Mt of natural gypsum in 2024, according to the figures published by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). Production rose by 2% year-on-year from 21.5Mt in 2023. The USGS listed California, Iowa and Kansas as the top producers among 15 gypsum-mining states in the US in 2024. 45 different mines contributed to the total. Major domestic applications for the gypsum included use as raw materials in the country’s 3.16Bnm2/yr-capacity gypsum wallboard industry. The sector sold an estimated 2.6Bnm2 of wallboard throughout the year, up by 4% year-on-year.

The US exported 45,000t of natural gypsum during 2024, up by 2% from 44,000t in 2024. Its imports declined year-on-year, meanwhile, by 4%, from 7.77Mt to 7.4Mt – 17% of a total domestic consumption of 44Mt.

Worker dies in incident at PABCO Building Products’ Newark gypsum wallboard plant

13 January 2023

US: A worker died in a hopper accident at PABCO Building Products’ Newark gypsum wallboard plant in California in late December 2022. The Alameda County Fire Department said that incident occurred when the worker became trapped in the hopper following an inspection of a blockage, according to CBS News. Workers at the plant and firefighters attempted to rescue him but were unsuccessful.

GMS to acquire Westside Building Material

US: GMS has agreed to acquire gypsum wallboard retailer Westside Building Material for US$135m. The trader operates nine sites across California and Nevada. The producer says that the company’s current management will continue to lead the business.

President and chief executive officer John Turner said, “The acquisition of Westside reflects the continued execution of our growth strategy and brings together two leading organisations with shared cultures and entrepreneurial values. Westside’s differentiated platform provides a unique opportunity for GMS to expand our reach and capture significant growth opportunities in strategically important West Coast markets.” He added “We believe that through this combination we will create new opportunities to deliver world-class service to our customers and value to our stakeholders for years to come.”

American Pacific Borates announces gypsum mining plans

24 September 2020

US: American Pacific Borates (ABR) has shared plans to begin mining natural gypsum at its Fort Cady borate mine around Barstow in San Bernardino County, California. The company says that it will extract its first batch for sale to the gypsum wallboard industry in mid 2021.

The Fort Cady borate mine works the world’s largest borate deposit. It also yields boron-enriched sulphate of potash for use as an agricultural fertiliser.

Foundation Building Materials’ sales fall

15 May 2020

US: Gypsum wallboard distributor Foundation Building Materials reports that sales of wallboard fell slightly to US$202m in the first quarter of 2020. This was attributed to disruption caused by the coronavirus outbreak. Overall its sales across all business lines rose, in part due to an additional business day in the reporting quarter compared to the same period in 2019. It noted lower sales growth in states with stronger lockdown measures, including Washington, California, Michigan, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Overall sales in April 2020 were reported as being 20% down year-on-year.

Bureau of Land Management seeks comment on USG gypsum quarry expansion project in California

19 July 2019

US: The Bureau of Land Management is seeking public comment on a proposed expansion of a USG gypsum quarry and associated water lines in Imperial County, California. USG wants to replace an existing water supply line to its Plaster City gypsum wallboard plant. The project will cost US$110m. The comment period will last until early September 2019.
