Canada: Georgia-Pacific spokesperson Rick Kimble has confirmed that the mothballed wallboard liner plant at Thorold, Ontario will be dismantled. The plant was idled in January 2014 due to excess capacity. Kimble said the company has acquired a demolition permit from the city and Georgia-Pacific has contracted Canadian firm Delsan AIM, headquartered in Montreal, to decommission the plant.
Delsan said on its website that it plans to carry out the demolition in an environmentally-sound and sensitive manner. "Delsan AIM recognises the historical significance that this paper mill once represented to the community and we are eager to do our part in helping this beautiful area 'prepare for the future,' " the company said.
Closure of DS Smith's Wansbrough paper plant due on 23 December 2015
16 December 2015UK: About 90,000t/yr of testliner capacity will soon be lost from the UK market. DS Smith will close its Wansbrough mill in Somerset, which also produces other products such as gypsum wallboard liner, on 23 December 2015.
DS Smith had announced a possible closure at the end of August 2015. At that time, the company had said the decision had been made after an assessment of the facility's long-term prospects.
The Wansbrough mill operates two paper machines. According to the plant manager, they manufacture roughly 90,000t/yr of testliner III, 30,000t/yr of coreboard, 18,000t/yr of recycled paper for bags, 12,000t/yr of recycled envelope paper and 10,000t/yr of other products such as wallboard liner.
DS Smith operates another paper mill in the UK, the Kemsley mill in Kent, where the company produces corrugated case material on three machines with a total capacity of around 800,000t/yr.
Germany/Austria: Austria based Prinzhorn Holding, a family-owned company with headquarters in Wiener Neudorf near Vienna, Austria has confirmed the takeover of the papermill Fritz Peters GmbH & Co KG. At the location in Gelsenkirchen, around 140 workers manufacture a total of 205,000t/yr of corrugated board and plasterboard liner. It has been agreed that the purchase price will remain confidential.
Located in the middle of the Ruhr region, the Peters papermill has developed into a local market leader over the past few years. The plant specialises in the production of packaging paper and technical specialty paper (such as white and brown testliner), as well as plasterboard liner. All paper products are manufactured using 100% recycled paper. The Peters papermill's annual tonnage has more than tripled since it was founded in 1972.
"We expect to see numerous synergies stemming from the integration of the plant in Gelsenkirchen with the group's other German production locations," Cord Prinzhorn, the CEO and owner's representative for Prinzhorn Holding, explained. "Our plans for Gelsenkirchen include extensive measures to increase efficiency and capacity. The new location in the heart of Germany will enable us to meaningfully optimise transport routes to our clients. The takeover is a result of our long-term expansion strategy for the future as well as our integrated production strategy, from recycling the raw material paper to producing high-quality packaging", said Cord Prinzhorn.
The approval of trade authorities is necessary for the conclusion of the purchase. Prinzhorn Holding and the seller have agreed to keep all other details about the purchase confidential.
