TXM reports net loss in the third quarter of 2015
29 October 2015Vietnam: Gypsum and Cement JSC (TXM) has posted a US$27,501 net loss in the third quarter of 2015, compared to a US$82,861 net profit in the same period of 2014. The company generated US$6.72m net revenue in the period, down by 16% year-on-year. Vietnam: Deputy prime minister Hoang Trung Hai has directed the implementation of solutions to treat waste at thermal power plants for energy conservation and environmental protection.
Trung Hai urged the concerned parties to more effectively implement Government Decision 1696/QD-TTg on measures to treat gypsum, ash and cinder from thermal power, chemical or fertiliser plants for the production of building materials. Special focus should be paid to the Vinh Tan in Binh Thuan, An Khanh in Thai Nguyen, Song Hau in Mekong Delta Hau Giang and Vung Ang in Ha Tinh thermal power plants, where waste treatment is a pressing issue.
He asked the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Ministry of Construction to coordinate with localities to disseminate effective waste treatment models while supplementing and completing criteria on the quality of ash and cinder for recycling in cement and construction material production.
Vietnam is home to 19 operating thermal power plants with a total capacity of 14,480MW, which discharge about 15Mt/yr of ash and cinder. After 2020, the country is expected to have 43 thermal power plants with a combined capacity of 39,020MW, discharging over 30Mt/yr of ash and cinder.
Vietnam: Saint-Gobain has increased its holding in Vinh Tuong Industrial Corp (VTI) from 14.8% to over 57% to consolidate its presence in the country. The deal will reinforce Saint-Gobain's presence in Vietnam, where it already operates a wallboard plant.
VTI is a major player in the Vietnamese construction materials market with expected sales of US$109m in 2015 from wallboard and wall solution sales. Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed.

DAP Joint Stock Company develops gypsum recycling project
26 January 2015Vietnam: DAP Joint Stock Company has found a solution to deal with gypsum created during production processes. The public has criticised the company for many years because of the 'acid leaking from its gypsum dumping ground.' However, the problem will be solved as DAP has found a way to recycle gypsum, turning it into artificial plaster to be used as a cement additive.
Since 2009 DAP has produced some 2Mt of gypsum, which is being kept at its temporary dumping ground. The ground is surrounded by clay and stone embankments with high-density polyethylene (HDPE) stratum to ensure that the water does not leak. There is a reservoir to collect acid from the waste and pump it back to the plant for use. When the pH content falls below the allowed level, the gypsum will be relocated to a major gypsum gathering ground, covering an area of 0.4km2, where it will be recycled into cement additives. A monitoring report from 30 September 2014 showed that the waste water was within the safety limits in accordance with the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment (MONRE) QCVN 09:2008/BTNMT standard on underground water quality.
Dinh Vu Gypsum JSC was established in 2010 following initial success in gypsum recycling tests. The company has finished the construction of a gypsum recycling plant and has installed 25% of the processing lines, with a capacity of 150,000t/yr per line. The plant, now in its trial run, has provided 10,000t of artificial plaster to the But Son Cement Plant in Ha Nam Province.
DAP has also joined forces with the Vietnam Cement Corporation (Vicem) to develop a project on processing gypsum. The two sides have signed a cooperation agreement, under which Vicem would be responsible for the consumption of the resulting cement additive.
Vietnam: Knauf Vietnam has commenced construction of its first gypsum wallboard plant in the northern port city of Hai Phong on 16 July 2014. Located in Dinh Vu Industrial Zone, the plant has been one of the largest foreign direct investment projects in the city. Covering an area of 63,000m2, the plant has a total investment of US$40m. When the plant is operational it will have a wallboard production capacity 12Mm2/yr.
"We have just launched two distributors in Vietnam, one in the south and one in the north and now we are starting the construction of our plant," said David Thomas, Knauf's general director. "We believe that, once completed by mid-2015, the plant will help us to gain a considerable market share in Vietnam in general and in the north in particular."
Thomas said that Knauf plans to expand its relationship with key partners such as distributors, architects, developers and government authorities, with an aim to widely introduce its products to the Vietnamese market.
"Dinh Vu Industrial Zone is a strategic location in terms of transportation and manufacturing that would provide the market with high quality products at competitive prices and improve the standards of the whole industry," said Thomas.
