US: Eagle Materials raised its sales in the first nine months of 2024 to US$1.79bn – up by under 1% year-on-year. Its profit also grew by under 1%, to US$569m. In the group’s Light Building Materials business, gypsum wallboard sales were US$271m, up by 8% year-on-year.

President and CEO Michael Haack praised the growth in the face of ‘ongoing adverse weather’ conditions in the Midwest and Great Plains markets. He said “While the path to lower interest rates and improved home-buying affordability is less certain today, we remain optimistic about our businesses and our ability to execute on the opportunities in front of us. Steady employment, housing supply that remains chronically short and our cost-structure advantages continue to provide favourable conditions for our gypsum wallboard business.” He added “Our consistent, disciplined operational and strategic approach should position us to continue to perform well through economic cycles and deliver value over the long term.”


Spain: Paper products specialist Alier has begun construction of a new €40m gypsum wallboard recycling plant in Zaragoza’s López Soriano Recycling Technology Park. The plant will recycle gypsum wallboards powered by a solar plant and biomass plant, generating net zero CO2 emissions. The Heraldo de Aragón newspaper has reported that the plant will create 130 direct jobs and an estimated 390 indirect jobs.


Kenya: The Kenyan government says that it is intensifying efforts to curb illegal gypsum mining, which is ‘rampant’ in the cement industry. Kenya News has reported that Cabinet Secretary Hassan Ali Joho claimed that 3000 unlicensed mines have already closed due to government actions since the beginning of 2022.

Joho said that Kenya’s cement sector has been ‘buying and using gypsum in cement manufacturing,’ however “There is no record of anyone licensed to mine gypsum in Kenya. There are no records on production, payment of taxes and royalties or community programmes undertaken by any gypsum dealer.” He added that this is because “They are doing it illegally.”


Tunisia: The president of Tunisia’s National Chamber of Gypsum Institutions and Professions, Maysara Al-Baroudi, has spoken about the untapped economic potential of Tunisia’s gypsum reserves. Addressing delegates at the Afro-European Economic Forum in Hammamet, Naboul Governorate, Al-Baroudi said that Tunisia’s reserves were close in volume to those of Canada, which the US Geological Survey reported as having 450Mt in 2024. In Tunisia, deposits of gypsum are situated in the Chaîne du Thaljah Mountains in Gafsa Governorate and in the Oued El Ghar area of Tataouine Governorate.

Initiatives that aim to generate increased value from the reserves include three upcoming gypsum products plants scheduled to launch in 2026 and a major community enterprise for gypsum extraction.


India: Knauf India has appointed Vijay Mishra as its new Commercial Director. Mishra brings over 23 years’ sales and marketing experience. Afaqs! News has reported that Mishra has held management roles at tiles producers H & R Johnson, RAK Ceramics and Kajaria Ceramics, at Saint-Gobain India and at plywood producer Century Plyboards.


US: A court has ordered Apodaca Wall Systems and Empire Wall Systems to pay workers for withheld overtime wages after violating the Fair Labor Standards Act. Due News has reported that the companies must each pay US$3.73m to a combined total of 1400 employees, along with a US$125,000 penalty to the US Department of Labor.


Azerbaijan: National production of construction gypsum was 103,000t in 2024, Azer-Press News has reported that this corresponds to year-on-year growth of 21%.


Ukraine: Knauf Ukraine has obtained a 20-year licence to mine the 43.9Mt Skoviatynske gypsum deposit in Ternopil, Western Ukraine. Business World Magazine News has reported that the company bid US$2.87m for the asset at auction. Knauf Ukraine already works the nearby Shyshkovets deposit.


Ukraine: Knauf Ukraine says that equipment is already in place for its upcoming 30Mm2/yr Ternopil gypsum wallboard plant at Borschiv, construction of which began in December 2024. Business World Magazine News has reported that the company imported the equipment from the site of a dismantled plant in Southern Germany.


UK: France-based Saint-Gobain subsidiary British Gypsum has launched the Gyproc SoundBloc Infinaé 100 gypsum wallboard in the UK. The board is the group’s first to feature 100% recycled gypsum. The producer said that construction firms supply used plasterboard from jobsites as raw materials, by means of British Gypsum’s collection service. The service also covers used adhesives and fillers.


Oman: National exports of gypsum were 12Mt in 2024. Former Zawawi Minerals director and CEO Ramachandran said that year-on-year growth was 7%, with volumes up from 11.2Mt in 2023.


US: Alternative wallboard developer Xeriant says that it has appointed Mark Sternberg to its advisory board. Sternberg is currently Chief Financial Officer at bio-engineering firm Debina Diagnostics. He previously worked as US Sales Manager of Saint-Gobain Abrasives and President of Moyco Precision Abrasives, which developed nano-diamonds, among other technologies.

Sternberg holds a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, and an MBA from Fox School of Business at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.


India: Representatives of the Indian and Omani government are in a fifth round of talks over a proposed Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement. Under the proposed agreement, the parties would reduce or eliminate customs on goods traded between the Indian Ocean nations. Gypsum is among India’s ‘key imports’ from Oman.


Ukraine: Knauf Ukraine has begun building its upcoming US$150m, 30Mm2/yr Ternopil gypsum wallboard plant in Ukraine, at Borshchiv in South Ukraine. Ukrainska Pravda News has reported that the plant will also produce 320,000t/yr of dry building mixes. Knauf Ukraine already operates a gypsum mine near the site.

Knauf Ukraine’s existing 25Mm2/yr gypsum wallboard and 200,000t/yr dry mix plant in Kyiv, Central Ukraine, employs 425 people, over 200 of them resituated from Knauf’s former Soledar operations in Russian-occupied Eastern Ukraine.


Spain: Knauf España has successfully achieved Cradle to Cradle (C2C) Silver certification for all gypsum wallboard and metal profiles produced at its Escúzar and Guixers plants. Corresponsables News has reported that the company is the first gypsum wallboard producer to do so globally. Its products achieved C2C Gold certification in the Material Reutilisation category.


Saudi Arabia: National Gypsum Company has signed a US$9.32m financing agreement with Riyad Bank. Mubasher News has reported that the loan will support expansions to its gypsum wallboard plants. The financing commenced on 5 January 2025, with a tenor of 18 months.
