Wallboard prices rise in western Canada
14 September 2016Canada: Wallboard prices have risen in western Canada following the implementation of antidumping tariffs of up to 277% on gypsum wallboard from the US. Builders and suppliers fear the ruling could disrupt the supply of the product for construction projects, including the rebuilding campaign in Fort McMurray in Alberta, according to the Canadian Press news agency.
The Canada Border Services Agency imposed preliminary tariffs on 6 September 2016 on US wallboard into Canada for use in British Colombia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, the Yukon and Northwest Territories. The provisional duty ranges from 125% on imports from CertainTeed Gypsum and Ceiling, 105% on Georgia-Pacific Gypsum, 144% on USG and 277% on all other importers.
Canada: The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has launched an investigation in whether gypsum wallboard from the US is being sold at 'unfair' prices in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, as well as the Yukon and Northwest Territories. The investigation is the result of a complaint filed by CertainTeed Gypsum Canada. The complainant alleges that jobs, profits and productivity in Canada are being harmed by the sale of these goods.
The CBSA and the Canadian International Trade Tribunal (CITT) will both play a role in the investigation. The CITT will begin a preliminary inquiry to determine whether the imports are harming the Canadian producer and will issue a decision by 8 August 2016. At the same time, the CBSA will investigate whether the imports are being sold in Canada at unfair prices, and will make a preliminary decision by 6 September 2016.
A national anti-dumping investigation into gypsum wallboard from the US was previously conducted by the CITT in 1992.
CertainTeed rolls out a stronger wallboard
12 January 2016US: CertainTeed has launched its new Habito wallboard, which it says is the strongest and hardest 1/2-inch (12.5mm) wallboard on the market.
Dave Engelhardt, President of CertainTeed Gypsum, said that the product helps eliminate the frustration homeowners have when hanging heavy objects as Habito can hold heavy objects without involving anchors or wall studs.
"Habito continues our emphasis on providing innovative products that offer practical solutions to builders and homeowners," said Engelhardt. The manufacturer pointed to the following features:
• Fastening capability: Fixing capabilities that eliminate the need for threaded wallboard anchors or nailing to wall studs for fixtures under 13.6kg.
• Builder and developer upgrades: Offers professionals an upmarket option, replacing standard wallboard in high-traffic and high-impact areas of the home.
• Better acoustics: Delivers homeowners better sound insulation than traditional wallboard.

18 November 2015US: CertainTeed has announced that it is the first company in the gypsum manufacturing industry to offer Health Product Declarations (HPDs) and Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for wallboard products.
The newly-published HPDs and EPDs provide scientifically-robust and transparent information about environmental performance and third-party verification to confirm the true sustainability of a product. The declarations also allow products to contribute towards points in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) building projects.
42 HPDs have been published to cover all CertainTeed gypsum wallboard product categories, including standard and specialty wallboard; Type X fire resistant and M2Tech moisture and mould-resistant wallboard products; GlasRoc exterior sheathing; AirRenew Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) wallboard; SilentFX noise-reducing wallboard and Easi-Lite lightweight gypsum wallboards. Six EPDs, grouped by manufacturing plant location, are also now available for Easi-Lite and 5/8-inch Type X fire-resistant gypsum wallboard.

Lowe’s and CertainTeed collaboration
17 April 2014US: Saint-Gobain's CertainTeed and home improvement retailer Lowe's have teamed up to offer the latest in backer board technology for easier, faster and more cost-effective tile installation projects.
Reinforced with embedded glass mats for added strength, moisture and mould resistance, Diamondback Tile Backer features a patent-pending polymer coating with a unique textured surface that creates a strong bond, reducing tile slippage during installation. Diamondback weighs 40% less than traditional cement boards and is much easier to handle, cut and install, saving installers valuable time. Highly mould resistant, CertainTeed's patented, proprietary Embedded Glass Reinforced Gypsum technology eliminates the need for an additional moisture barrier. Diamondback has also achieved GreenGuard Gold Certification.
"We are very excited about this partnership with Lowe's, which makes our innovative tile backer much more accessible to the homeowner DIY and contractor customer base," said Kelly Kuethe, marketing manager of CertainTeed.

US: More than a dozen lawsuits alleging price-fixing on the part of major manufacturers of wallboard have been consolidated in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. The location was chosen as most of the parties are located in the area and a majority of the parties advocated for consolidation in that district. US District Judge Michael Baylson will handle the case.
"From at least September 2011 to the present the defendants, manufacturers of gypsum board, combined and conspired to fix and raise the prices at which they sold gypsum board in the United States beginning with large and coordinated price increases that all became effective on or about 1 or 2 January 2012," according to the complaint filed in one case originating in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, Janicki Drywall versus CertainTeed.
Major manufacturers of wallboard have annual sales of more than US$5bn, according to the complaint and the defendants are seeking treble damages. The defendants in the suit account for more than 99% of wallboard sold in North America, according to the complaint. They are USG, National Gypsum, CertainTeed, Georgia-Pacific, American Gypsum, Lafarge, Temple-Inland and PABCO.
In a previous status conference for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania cases, Steven Bizar of Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney was named as interim liaison counsel for the defence, while H Laddie Montague Jr of Berger & Montague had been named interim liaison counsel for the plaintiffs.
