Canada: France-based Saint-Gobain has inaugurated its CertainTeed gypsum wallboard plant in Sainte-Catherine, near Montreal. The unit is fully electrified and powered by hydroelectricity. The company says that the site is the first zero-carbon (scope 1 and 2) wallboard plant in North America and the largest in the world to be fully powered by electricity. The launch of a new production line at the existing plant, along with equipment modernisation, has enabled a 40% increase in production capacity while reducing energy consumption by 30% and CO₂ emissions by approximately 44,000t/yr.
Mark Rayfield, CEO Saint-Gobain North America said “This ambitious project strengthens our leadership position in light construction in Canada and meets the strong local demand for sustainable solutions. It accelerates our growth in the country, where we have tripled in size in three years.”
The upgraded wallboard plant is the group’s second after the one in Fredrikstad, Norway that was inaugurated in 2023.
Knauf Oy to electrify calcination process
02 October 2025Finland: Knauf Oy is preparing to electrify the calcination process at its Kankaanpää gypsum wallboard plant. An electrified hybrid dryer was installed at the site in 2024. Now, four new 2MW heaters is scheduled to be added in the summer of 2026. The cost of the project will be around €5m. Knauf recently released its new LOWR product line, where boards are dried with an electrified plasterboard dryer using 100% renewable electricity.
WEIG invests in Latin American wallboard liner market
09 September 2025Paraguay: WEIG Group subsidiary Yaguarete Papeles has purchased a new paper production unit. The equipment will produce wallboard liner and testliner using recycled fibre. It was previously installed at a production site in Germany. Dismantling is underway, with delivery to the plant in Paraguay scheduled for mid-2026.
Weig Technical Liner Managing Director Bernd Stibi said "We are taking an important step to strengthen our presence in Latin America. The investment allows us to reliably supply our customers with high-quality plasterboard liner, while at the same time supporting sustainable growth in the region."
CertainTeed reduces water use at Winnipeg gypsum wallboard plant
04 September 2025Canada: Saint-Gobain subsidiary CertainTeed has concluded a year-long trial to increase the efficiency of CertainTeed 5/8 Type X gypsum wallboard production at its Winnipeg plant through recipe optimisation and technology upgrades. The producer adjusted its water-to-stucco ratio and replaced the line’s existing magnetic flow meters with Coriolis flow meters. It cut water usage by 1.09 million litres (3%), energy consumption by 25,000MWhr and CO₂ emissions by 5.6t year-on-year, while also increasing productivity by 5% year-on-year.
The producer now plans to roll out other water management initiatives based on the case study of the Winnipeg plant across its plants in Calgary, Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver.
US: Eagle Materials reported revenues of US$635m in the first quarter of the 2026 Fiscal Year (FY2026), up by 4% year-on-year. The group’s adjusted earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA), however, fell by 4%, to US$215m. Its net earnings fell by 8%, to US$123m.
In its gypsum business, the company noted ‘steady’ single-family residential construction demand amid a ‘less clear’ interest rate environment. Revenues rose by 1%, to US$251m, and net earnings remained level year-on-year, at US$102m. Gypsum wallboard sales volumes rose by 4%, to 72.8Mm2, while prices dropped by 3%, to US$2.50/m2. During the quarter, Eagle Materials commenced the purchase of equipment for its upcoming Duke, Oklahoma, gypsum wallboard plant upgrade and expansion.
Michael Haack, president and CEO, said "Eagle had a solid start to FY2026. Against the current backdrop of ongoing macroeconomic and policy uncertainty as well as adverse weather conditions across many of our markets, our portfolio of businesses continued to perform well, and our end markets remained resilient.”
South America: Belgium-based Etex has announced planned and on-going capital expenditure (CAPEX) investments of €65.7m in its gypsum wallboard plants in South America up to 2027. This consists of a €32.5m upgrade to its Huachipa plant in Lima, Peru, a €21.4m upgrade to its Santa Rosa plant in Santiago, Chile, and a €11.8m upgrade to its La Pampa plant in General Acha, Argentina. The Huachipa plant upgrade is scheduled for completion in late 2026, the Santa Rosa plant upgrade for August 2026 and the La Pampa plant upgrade for early 2027.
CEO Bernard Delvaux said "Latin America is a key region where we have been present for 90 years, with 23 sites and close to 2300 teammates today. We are not only scaling our operations but also raising the bar in efficiency, safety and environmental performance."
National Gypsum Company to upgrade Riyadh plaster plants
26 February 2025Saudi Arabia: National Gypsum Company has signed a contract with LVJOE Machinery Manufacturing Group for work to upgrade production lines at its Riyadh plaster plants, scheduled for completion in late 2025. Mist News has reported that the total value of the upgrades as US$3.96m.
Saint-Gobain to upgrade Huachipa facility
12 August 2024Peru: France-based Saint-Gobain has submitted a technical report for a proposed upgrade to its Huachipa facility. The project aims to optimise production and secure compliance with environmental regulations. Noticias Financieras News has reported that the work will cost US$259,000 and take up to eight weeks complete.
CSR to expand Welshpool gypsum wallboard plant
07 August 2024Australia: Saint-Gobain subsidiary CSR plans to expand its Welshpool gypsum wallboard plant in Western Australia. The producer plans to upgrade the plant’s production line and expand warehouses that serve it and the neighbouring Bradford building materials plant. CSR said that the upgrade to the Welshpool wallboard plant will reduce its consumption of natural gas and electricity and facilitate its transition to alternative fuels or electricity.
CEO Paul Dalton said "This significant investment will make Welshpool safer and more sustainable, increase capacity and improve productivity and cost efficiency, all while removing risk from our supply chain.”
Saint-Gobain Gyproc’s Abu Dhabi gypsum wallboard plant recycles 22,000t of gypsum since 2014
08 January 2024UAE: The wallboard recycling unit at Saint-Gobain Gyproc’s Abu Dhabi gypsum wallboard plant has processed 22,000t of gypsum since 2014, the L'Usine Nouvelle newspaper has reported. The producer said that the Abu Dhabi plant can incorporate 10 – 12% recycled materials in its gypsum wallboard production. It runs on a diversified energy supply, which in its most recent recorded month included 55% nuclear, 38% natural gas and 7% solar energy.
In 2023, Saint-Gobain reduced its non-recycled waste by 78% year-on-year and its water footprint by 14% from 2017 levels in the UAE.
