Eternit to upgrade gypsum wallboard plants in Peru
08 March 2019Peru: Eternit plans to upgrade its gypsum wallboard plants at Cercado in Lima and Huachipa. Wallboard consumption is 0.4m2/yr per capita in Peru compared to 2.7m2/yr per capita in Chile, according to the Gestión newspaper. The subsidiary of Belgium’s Etex plans to increase its revenue from wallboard to 50% from 40% at present.
Uzbekistan: Germany’s Knauf has increased the production capacity of its Bukhara wallboard plant by 40% to 33.5Mm2/yr. This follow an investment of Euro16m in mid-2018, according to the Uzbekistan National News Agency. Knauf was previously reported to be considering building another gypsum wallboard plant in the country.
Gyproc Belgium prepares for natural gypsum at Kallo plant
30 October 2018Belgium: Gyproc Belgium has installed a new mill to grind natural gypsum at its Kallo wallboard plant. The unit will continue to use flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) gypsum sourced from coal-fired power stations but the company is preparing for future changes in supply, according to the HLN newspaper.
Knauf holds 70% market share in Uzbekistan
12 July 2018Uzbekistan: Knauf holds a 70% share in the gypsum wallboard market. The German building materials producer sold 22.8Mm2 of wallboard in 2017, according to the Trend News Agency. It increased the production capacity of its Bukhara wallboard plant in mid-2018 by 30% with an investment of US$22m. Knauf is also planning to build another wallboard plant in the country with an investment of over US$20m. This project is currently at the design stage.
Saint-Gobain to invest Euro120m in Spain
05 July 2018Spain: Saint-Gobain plans to invest Euro120m over the next three years in its local subsidiary. In an interview with the Cinco Dias newspaper, Gianni Scotti, the chief executive officer (CEO) for Spain, Italy, Portugal, Greece and North Africa warned against rising electricity costs in the country. The bulk of the investment will go towards upgrading the Fábrica de Quinto wallboard plant in Zaragoza.
Spain: Saint-Gobain Placo Iberia plans to spend Euro4.5m on upgrades to its Fábrica de Quinto wallboard plant in Zaragoza. The project started in 2017 with an investment of Euro1m, according to the Heraldo de Aragón newspaper. In July 2018 the company plans to spend Euro0.5m towards improving the quality of its wallboard and preparing a production line for new products. The majority of the investment will go towards improving logistics at the unit and expanding its storage capacity. A new wallboard recycling plant is also planned.
USG seeks to expand gypsum quarry in Michigan
19 March 2018US: USG has submitted a purchase application to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to expand its operations for its gypsum quarry at Alabaster, Michigan. The wallboard producer wants to buy 580 acres of state property adjacent to the sitem according to the Associated Press. The DNR says it will study the company's plan, considering issues involving forestry, wildlife, fisheries, recreation and minerals. It also will consult with tribal governments and host a public meeting.
USG founded the Alabaster quarry in 1902 and it employs 20 workers at the site. Customers for gypsum from the mine include LafargeHolcim cement plant in Alpena, Michigan and St Marys Cement’s cement grinding plant in Detroit. It says it wants to expand the quarry in order to extend its life span.
Knauf Gips Bukhara suspends production until March 2018
25 January 2018Uzbekistan: Knauf Gips Bukhara has suspended production of gypsum wallboard at its plant in Bukhara until 1 March 2018 while it builds a new production line. The upgrade is planned to increase the unit’s production capacity by 30%. It was originally scheduled for completion in 2017. Knauf has spent Euro40m on the project.
USG Boral to spend US$20m on upgrade in Vietnam
08 December 2017Vietnam: USG Boral plans to invest US$20m towards upgrading its gypsum wallboard plant at the Hiep Phuoc Industrial Zone in Ho Chi Minh City. The project will increase the plant’s production capacity by 17Mm2 to 47Mm2 when it starts operation in September 2019.
"We have witnessed strong growth from this region so our decision to invest in the plant is a strategic one. We remain committed to building USG Boral's presence in Southeast Asia. This expansion will see USG Boral utilising our latest Sheetrock technology to provide superior building solutions for the Vietnam market," said Frederic de Rougemont, CEO of USG Boral.
USG Boral started wallboard production in Vietnam in 2006. It produces the Sheetrock, FireBloc, Durock and Firerock brands.
Wacker starts work on expanding Ulsan plant in South Korea
10 November 2017South Korea: Wacker Chemie has broken ground on a new expansion project at its Ulsan plant. The group is building a new spray dryer for dispersible polymer powders at the unit, which will have a total capacity of 80,000t/yr. It is also constructing an additional reactor for dispersions based on vinyl acetate-ethylene copolymer (VAE), which are needed as the raw material for the spray dryer to produce dispersible polymer powders. Wacker says that the Ulsan’s plant complex, which covers the entire production chain from VAE dispersions to dispersible polymer powders, will be one of the largest of its kind in the world. Investments will total around Euro60m and production is scheduled to start in the first quarter of 2019.
The expansion is intended to meet growing demand for its binder products in the construction industries in South Korea and Southeast Asia. Wacker dispersions and dispersible polymer powders are used in a variety of construction industry applications including modifying gypsum plasters and fillers.
