US: The Bureau of Land Management has approved American Gypsum’s proposal to expand its gypsum mine at Eagle, Colorado by around 40 hectares. The current quarry has been in operation since 1984. The mine and associated Eagle gypsum wallboard plant near Gypsum produce around 60Mm2/yr of wallboard and employ nearly 100 people. American Gypsum is the fifth largest producer of gypsum wallboard in North America, operating four wallboard plants.
Knauf plans second Bukhara gypsum wallboard plant
20 March 2020Uzbekistan: Knauf has announced plans for a second gypsum wallboard production line in Bukhara, Bukhara region. The plans also include an investment of Euro2.2m in an additional gypsum mixture line at its Bukharagips plant, also in Bukhara, which produces dry building mixes. Trend News has reported that Knauf is currently Uzbekistan’s leading producer of gypsum wallboard, which it sells on the Uzbek, Afghan and Turkmen markets.
Cabot Gypsum to upgrade plant in Nova Scotia
13 February 2020Canada: Cabot Gypsum is investing just under US$5m on upgrade to its Port Tupper gypsum wallboard plant in Nova Scotia. Company president Marcel Girouard said demand for rented residential properties was driving the expansion, according to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. The project is expected to create up to 40 new jobs.
The wallboard producer has benefited from the building materials distribution network operated by its parent company, Acadian Drywall. It acquired the Port Tupper plant in 2011 following its closure in 2008.
RiTE Ugljevik power station starts desulphurisation unit
17 December 2019Bosnia & Herzegovina: A three-month test run of hot flue gas desulphurisation at RiTE’s Ugljevik coal-fired power station in the Republika Srpska region began on 13 December 2019. The Euro80m installation will reduce sulphur dioxide (SO2) emissions to 200ppm from 16,000ppm, in accordance with European Union standards, and produce an unspecified quantity of gypsum. Ugljevik manager Čedomir Stojanović said, “we are considering the construction of a second plant.”
Eternit to expand Huachipa gypsum wallboard plant in 2020
11 September 2019Peru: Eternit plans to start upgrading its Huachipa gypsum wallboard plant in 2020. It wants to start investing in the project in early 2020, according to the El Comercio newspaper. Following the upgrade the plant will double its production capacity by the end of 2021. The subsidiary of Belgium’s Etex wants to benefit from increased usage of wallboard products in the country. It was 0.45m2/capita in 2018 and the company is aiming to increase this to 1m2/capita by 2025.
Bureau of Land Management seeks comment on USG gypsum quarry expansion project in California
19 July 2019US: The Bureau of Land Management is seeking public comment on a proposed expansion of a USG gypsum quarry and associated water lines in Imperial County, California. USG wants to replace an existing water supply line to its Plaster City gypsum wallboard plant. The project will cost US$110m. The comment period will last until early September 2019.
India: NTPC says it plans to install flue-gas desulphurisation (FGD) units at all of its power stations. The state-owned power producer commissioned the country's first FGD unit at the 500MW unit number 13 (stage V) unit at its 4760MW Vindhyachal power plant in 2017 for a cost of around US$30m, according to the Press Trust of India. 1275t and 1515t of synthetic gypsum from the unit has been supplied to ACC and JP Cement respectively since the unit was started.
"With an aim to embrace sustainable practices to produce power with minimum emissions, NTPC is implementing this technology across its power plants. At present, the adoption of this technology is currently at various stages of implementation for 65.35GW of group capacity in 38 locations, which also includes upcoming projects," the state-owned power producer said.
Earlier in July 2019 GE Power India said it had has won three FGD projects from NTPC at the Simhadri Super Thermal Power Station, the Sipat Super Thermal Power Station and the Aravali Power Company plant, IGSTPP Jhajjar.
Romania: France’s Fives has supplied a new FCB TSV1600 MF for Etex’s calcined gypsum grinding plant in Aghires. The project is part of an upgrade to the unit to close the existing open circuit. Commissioning took place in late January 2019.
Eternit to upgrade gypsum wallboard plants in Peru
08 March 2019Peru: Eternit plans to upgrade its gypsum wallboard plants at Cercado in Lima and Huachipa. Wallboard consumption is 0.4m2/yr per capita in Peru compared to 2.7m2/yr per capita in Chile, according to the Gestión newspaper. The subsidiary of Belgium’s Etex plans to increase its revenue from wallboard to 50% from 40% at present.
Uzbekistan: Germany’s Knauf has increased the production capacity of its Bukhara wallboard plant by 40% to 33.5Mm2/yr. This follow an investment of Euro16m in mid-2018, according to the Uzbekistan National News Agency. Knauf was previously reported to be considering building another gypsum wallboard plant in the country.
