US: France-based Saint-Gobain has announced a 120MW wind power supply deal with Blooming Grove Wind Farm, the largest renewable energy contract in the gypsum wallboard producer’s history. The 12-year contract, which secures 120MW of the available 250MW of power for Saint-Gobain from the wind farm in Illinois, will reduce the company’s US carbon footprint by 21%, it says. “This makes North America a significant contributor in our global network towards helping meet Saint-Gobain’s sustainability goal of net-zero CO_² emissions by 2050,” said Saint-Gobain North America president and CEO Mark Rayfield.

China: Mainland China's leading cement producer Conch Cement has announced that it is seeking bidders for a gypsum supply contract. The contract will cover the supply of synthetic gypsum produced by flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) between 1 February 2020 and 31 July 2020.

India: Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHE) has been awarded two flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) system orders at a value of for just under US$350m two thermal power plants. The orders involve supply and installation of FGD systems for 13 coal based units at the 2600MW Korba STPS Stage I, II & Ill in Chhattisgarh and the 2100MW Ramagundam STPS Stage I & II in Telangana. BHE's scope of work includes design, engineering, civil works, supply, erection and commissioning of wet FGD system along with auxiliaries, including limestone and gypsum handling system and wet stack on a full engineering, procurement and construction basis. The orders follow a contract awarded in July 2019 to supply a FGD system for the Nabinagar Thermal Power Project.

India: GE Power India has won three wet flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) projects. A contract worth US$335m covers the supply and installation of FGD systems at two NTPC coal power plants, the Simhadri Super Thermal Power Station and the Sipat Super Thermal Power Station, and one Aravali Power Company plant, IGSTPP Jhajjar.

GE’s scope includes design, engineering, civil work, supply, erection and commissioning of Wet FGD systems along with auxiliaries, including limestone and gypsum handling systems and wet stack on full turnkey basis. In addition, GE’s scope for IGSTPP Jhajjar also includes 10 years of operation and maintenance including the supply of spare parts.

With these three wet FGD projects together, GE will help NTPC to treat 35Mm³/hr of flue gas and will remove up to 0.11Mt/yr of SO₂, which will be converted into gypsum by-product for use in the construction industry.

India: GE Power India has been award a contract by Aravali Power worth US$107m for a flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) system. The contract is for design, engineering, civil work, supply, erection and commissioning of wet FGD systems along with auxiliaries like limestone and gypsum handling systems and wet stack on full turnkey basis.

Aravali Power is a joint venture company between NTPC, Haryana Power Generation Company and Indraprastha Power Generation Company. It operates a coal power station near Jharli, Jhajjar in Haryana with three 500MW units. An additional two 660MW units are planned for a future expansion project.

Australia: Senex Energy has agreed a deal with CSR Gyprock to supply natural gas to its gypsum wallboard plant at Coopers Plains in Queensland. The agreement also covers gas supplies to CSR’s brick and insulation plants in the state. Under the initial three-year agreement, Senex will supply CSR Building Products, a subsidiary of CSR, with 0.65PJ/yr of gas, starting on 1 January 2020. CSR can extend the agreement by up to a further two years, taking the total contract quantity to 3.25PJ. Gas will be supplied at the Wallumbilla Gas Hub in Queensland at a fixed price in line with current market levels, indexed annually.

UK: British Gypsum has signed a five-year contract with PD Ports to process its natural gypsum imports. The deal will bring raw materials from Europe into the country via Teesport every two weeks where it will be stored in a new bulk storage unit. The gypsum will then be dispatched by rail to British Gypsum’s plants at Kirkby Thore in Cumbria and Sherburn-In-Elmet in Yorkshire. No value for the deal has been disclosed.

UK: Logistics company AV Dawson has signed a deal with British Gypsum to import materials for gypsum wallboard and plaster production. Raw materials will be imported through AV Dawson’s Teesside marine terminal in Middlesbrough and then transported by train to British Gypsum’s operations in the East Midlands. The deal will see AV Dawson invest over Euro2m in new facilities and equipment, including a new canopy to stores import materials. The deal will also create 10 new jobs at AV Dawson.

UK: Formula, a brand of Saint-Gobain, has awarded a five-year contract to Darlington-based Banner Contracts to extract high purity gypsum from its opencast mine in Newark, Nottinghamshire. Banner Contracts was chosen after a tender process involving eight potential suppliers.

The opencast mine, known as Bantycock, produces around 230,000t/yr of gypsum. Nottinghamshire County Council agreed a revised restoration scheme at the site following consultation. So far this has seen the backfilling of 25 acres with overburden completed and covered with topsoil in 2016.

"Banner's professionalism and expertise is second to none so we are delighted to announce this contract. Its experience in mineral processing was a key factor in its selection as it will help us continue to improve our yield of useable gypsum versus the amount of rock we extract. This improved yield helps maximise the reserve life, whilst operating in a safe and sustainable manner. We look forward to a mutually beneficial relationship over the duration of the contract," said Saint-Gobain Formula Plant Manager Mark Yates.

Banner Contracts Director Jo Banner added that the contract is a large one for the company and that it has invested in a new plant and equipment. New installations at the site include a Hercules trommell commissioned especially for the application, a number of Tesab machines including a 800i jaw crusher, a TS1860 scalping screen, a TS2430 screen and a Trackstack radial conveyor and a sizer from MMD.

India: Larsen & Toubro has signed a long-term technical licence agreement with Japan's Chiyoda Corporation for its Chiyoda Thoroughbred 121TM (CT-121TM) flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) technology. The agreement grants L&T exclusive rights to undertake engineering, procurement and construction with this system.

The deal follows a notification by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) issued in December 2015 that placed new limits on SO2 emissions for coal-based thermal power plants. The legislation has called for mandatory installation of FGD systems in new power plants, including those currently under construction and many that are already operational.

In the CT-121TM FGD process developed by Chiyoda SO2 is absorbed from flue gas generated by coal-fired, oil-fired and other types of boilers and removed as gypsum. Unlike conventional processes in which the reagent slurry is sprayed on flue gas, the CT-121TM process uses Chiyodas unique absorber, the Jet Bubbling Reactor, in which the flue gas is blown into the reagent slurry, forming a fine bubble bed where SO2 is absorbed, oxidised by injected air, and then neutralised by ground limestone slurry.

Larsen & Toubro and Chiyoda's relationship dates back over two decades with L&T-Chiyoda Limited, a joint-venture catering to the hydrocarbon sector. Through the signing of this agreement, the two companies have extended their association into the power sector as well.
