Gypsum consultant Bob Bruce dies
24 July 2023Canada: Gypsum industry veteran Bob Bruce has died at the age of 72.
Bob Bruce worked in the gypsum sector for over 40 years. He obtained a PhD in chemistry from McMaster University in the 1970s and then worked for various gypsum companies, including BPB, in North America and Europe. He later became a consultant in the late 1990s when he founded Innogyps, before setting up NuGyp Corp in 2008. Bob Bruce was well-known as an author, speaker and mentor. He attended and spoke at many Global Gypsum Conferences over the years, and had many contacts and friends around the world. He was the Global Gypsum Personality of the Year in 2007.
Bruce's family will hold a celebration of his life in Toronto, Ontario on 28 July 2023, and have invited donations to the Joseph Brant Hospital Foundation, the CAMH Foundation and the Canadian Cancer Society in lieu of flowers. Online condolences can be made here.
Canada: Leading global gypsum recycling company New West Gypsum Recycling announced the death of its founder and chief executive officer Tony McCamley on 16 March 2023. It said that McCamley will be 'deeply and dearly' missed as a proud Irishman and for his sense of humour and love of his family.
The company said "Tony was an innovator and a visionary; he was passionate about his business and his family. He started New West Gypsum Recycling over 35 years ago and it has grown into a global business with a lasting environmental impact. His success is attributed to his hard work and dedication: his legacy will live on."
US: A worker died in a hopper accident at PABCO Building Products’ Newark gypsum wallboard plant in California in late December 2022. The Alameda County Fire Department said that incident occurred when the worker became trapped in the hopper following an inspection of a blockage, according to CBS News. Workers at the plant and firefighters attempted to rescue him but were unsuccessful.
Workers die at Chiyoda-Ute’s Yokkaichi gypsum wallboard plant
02 December 2022Japan: Two workers have died at Chiyoda-Ute’s Yokkaichi gypsum wallboard plant in Mie Prefecture. The accident occurred when three sub-contractors were conducting regular maintenance work near a wood waste boiler at the site. Local press reports that the workers became trapped in a dust collector during the incident. Chiyoda-Ute is investigating what happened.
Former head of BPB dies in plane accident
03 January 2018Australia/UK: Richard Cousins the former chief executive of UK-based wallboard producer BPB has died in a plane accident in Australia. He worked for six years as the chief executive officer for BPB following a number of previous roles at the company. Following its takeover by Saint-Gobain he subsequently joined the board of Compass group in the food services sector and became its group chief executive in 2006.
Knauf’s Prof. Dr. Hans-Ulrich Hummel dies
29 August 2017Germany: Prof. Dr. Hans-Ulrich Hummel died on 18 August 2017 at the age of 63. Prof. Dr. Hummel had worked at Knauf since 1992 and led its research and development activities for more than 20 years. Most recently he was responsible for the Product Management, Patent Management and Quality Management departments of the Knauf Group.
A Knauf press release stated that his strong interest in new topics and his visionary ideas inspired his colleagues and carried the company forward in the technical and scientific fields. It added that he contributed decisively to the success of the Knauf Group with his future-oriented developmental work and great personal commitment and that he was a respected and appreciated leader, who was always receptive to the matters of his colleagues. Knauf said that it was 'highly grateful' to Prof. Dr. Hummel and that it would continue to honour his memory.
Prof. Dr. Hummel was Global Gypsum 'Personality of the Year' 2010.

Boulders kill worker in Karak gypsum mine
10 June 2015Jordan: According to local media, Luqman Shah, a young labourer, was killed when he was hit by rolling boulders while working in a gypsum mine in the Khandi Mountain near Lakki Banda village in Karak Tehsil.
Mehmood Shah, president of the Bright Future Gypsum Labour Welfare Union, said that landslide incidents in the mines in which labourers lose their lives and in which their families never receive any compensation, were on the rise. Shah said that the workers union sent the case of Luqman Shah to the mineral department to gain compensation for his family. He added that so far, the families of 27 killed workers out of 80 had been compensated by the department.
