Winstone Wallboards to build US$181m wallboard plant

New Zealand: Fletcher Building’s subsidiary Winstone Wallboards plans to build a US$181m gypsum wallboard plant in Auckland. The new unit is expected to create around 200 new jobs, according to the New Zealand Herald newspaper. Negotiations at the Drury site have not yet been concluded yet. The company hopes that the new plant will be operational in 2021 or 2022. The new development is planned to meet local demands and upgrade the existing capacity at Winstone Wallboards’ Penrose plant in Auckland.

Belgips wallboard plant hoping to open in mid-2019

Belarus: Construction of Belgips new 30MM2/yr gypsum wallboard plant in Gatovo, Minsk District is expected to be completed in October 2018. The plant will then take another six months for start-up and commissioning before it starts commercial operation in mid-2019, according to Belarus Daily News. The unit is a joint venture between Russia’s Volma Corporation and Germany’s Knauf.

Saint-Gobain Placo Iberia to spend Euro4.5m on upgrades to Fábrica de Quinto plant

Spain: Saint-Gobain Placo Iberia plans to spend Euro4.5m on upgrades to its Fábrica de Quinto wallboard plant in Zaragoza. The project started in 2017 with an investment of Euro1m, according to the Heraldo de Aragón newspaper. In July 2018 the company plans to spend Euro0.5m towards improving the quality of its wallboard and preparing a production line for new products. The majority of the investment will go towards improving logistics at the unit and expanding its storage capacity. A new wallboard recycling plant is also planned.

Construction starts of gypsum plant in Tataouine

Tunisia: Construction work has started on a gypsum plant at Ezzahra in Tataouine. The Euro10m plant will produce 300t/day of gypsum, according to African Manager. The unit is scheduled to start production in early 2020.

National Gypsum to spend US$25m to reopen Wilmington wallboard plant

US: National Gypsum will reopen its Wilmington, North Carollina wallboard plant which was idled in 2009. The company plans to spend US$25m on upgrading the site. The company also plans to build a rail spur into the plant to support despatch by railway. The site will use raw gypsum from the company’s quarry in Halifax, Nova Scotia in Canada.

"We expect to have the plant operational by the end of the year," said chief executive officer Tom Nelson. The company intends to use the plant to grow its specialty gypsum wallboard board product lines, which include mould and moisture-resistant features. Nelson thanked the Wilmington Business Development, New Hanover County Commission, and Wilmington City Council for assistance with the project so far. Thanks was also given to the North Carolina Railroad Company, the North Carolina Department of Transportation, and Duke Energy for their support.

Matanat-A plant in Iran to cost US$10m

Iran: Azerbaijan’s Matanat-A gypsum plant is estimated to cost around US$10m. The head of mining and industrial organization of Semnan Province, Behrouz Asfadi, said that production at the plant was expected to start in the ‘near future,’ according to the Trend News Agency. Jafar Sarghini, the deputy minister of industries, mining and trade, added that Matanat-A is already using a gypsum mine in northern Iran and the plant is expected to be located nearby.

Panel Rey inaugurates wallboard plant in Ciudad Juárez

Mexico: Panel Rey has inaugurated its gypsum wallboard plant in Ciudad Juárez. The company spent over US$55m on the plant that it says it the largest in Latin America. It is its fifth wallboard plant in the country following plants at El Carmen NL, San Luis Potosi, Mexico City and Mexicali. Construction at the site started in 2010 and first production started in early April 2018. Nicolás Alverde Villareal, the general director of Panel Rey, and Javier Corral Jurado, the governor of the state of Chihuahua, attended the event. The new plant is expected to created 170 direct jobs.

Local government approves incentives package for National Gypsum’s Wilmington plant to reopen

US: The commissioners of New Hanover country in North Carolina have approved a US$0.35m incentive package for National Gypsum to open its Wilmington wallboard plant. The package will be offered over five years if the wallboard producer meets benchmarks that include investing US$25m in the plant and hiring at least 51 people at the site, according to the Star News newspaper. The city of Wilmington is also considering offering a package of US$0.23m. However, pollution concerns have been aired at public hearings about re-starting the plant.

China National Building Material starts gypsum wallboard plant project in Tanzania

China/Tanzania: China National Building Material (CNBM) has started work on a gypsum wallboard plant in Tanzania. The project is part of its participation in the government’s ‘One bet, one road’ industrial strategy.

Revenue from the group’s new materials division that produces gypsum wallboard rose by 25% year-on-year in 2017 to US$2.03bn from US$1.62bn in 2016. Its adjusted earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation (EBTIDA) rose by 40% to US$577m from US$413m. Its production volumes of gypsum boards rose by 12% to 1826Mm2 from 1632Mm2.

Lafarge Canada converts former Kamloops cement plant to agricultural gypsum producer

26 March 2018

Canada: Lafarge Canada has filed an application under the Environmental Management Act to discharge emissions from a pumice dryer and gypsum granulator at its mothballed cement plant at Kamloops in British Colombia. The building materials manufacturer plans to produce agricultural gypsum and dry pumice for concrete production at the site, according to the Kamloops This Week newspaper. The plant stopped cement production in late 2016.
