British Gypsum wallboard partition systems granted Code for Construction Product Information mark

29 September 2023

UK: British Gypsum’s non-loadbearing metal stud plasterboard partition systems, including shaft walls, have become one of the first products on the local market to carry the Code for Construction Product Information (CCPI) mark. The scheme is intended to provide assurance to end users that the product information for these products is clear, accurate, accessible, up-to-date and unambiguous.

The CCPI was initiated by the Construction Product Association (CPA) as a direct response to Judith Hackitt’s review of Building Regulations and Fire Safety set up in the wake of the Grenfell Tower fire in 2017. The CPA is a UK-based construction industry trade association.

Adaptavate raises Euro2.3m in funding to support commercialisation of bio-based alternative wallboard

03 August 2023

UK: Adaptavate has raised around Euro2.3m in its latest investment round. This investment round has been led by Counteract, with Low Carbon Innovation Fund 2 (LCIF2), Semin and Perivoli Innovations. It follows Adaptavate’s previous seed funding round, announced in March 2022, and subsequent support received to industrialise the development of carbon negative construction materials including developing industrial processes to make low-carbon and carbon absorbing plaster and wallboard.

The company is currently building a development centre, including laboratories and a pilot production, line in Bristol and conducting research to complete testing and licencing programmes for its Breathaboard product. Breathaboard is a gypsum-free wallboard manufactured from compostable crop waste. Adaptavate intends to start use Breathaboard produced on the new line in pilot construction projects by the end of 2023. The new funding will also be used to develop other sustainable building products. The company is additionally looking to licence its technology to the large building products manufacturers and has already started conversations with potential partners.

Tom Robinson, the chief executive officer and founder of Adaptavate, said “This funding round is a pivotal point in the acceleration of Adaptavate and our aim to be the world leader in this space. With the support of like-minded funding partners, we are leading the carbon revolution of building materials as a form of carbon capture and utilisation. What I am most pleased about is that this funding round was oversubscribed, which shows the appetite for near to market, industrially scalable carbon absorbing technologies, even at an economically challenging time.”

Albér Gypsum develops sprayable gypsum ‘board’

22 June 2023

US: Albér Gypsum has developed an adhesive gypsum-based plaster ‘board’ product that can be used in place of traditional gypsum wallboard. Using the new process gypsum powder is first mixed with water into a mixture lightweight cement sprayer. The company has also designed a special spray gun for this purpose. The plaster is then sprayed onto the wall construction or/and insulation, evened out and left to dry for up to six hours. A patent is currently pending for the new method.

The developer says that the gypsum-based plaster product eliminates air pockets in a wall, covers electrical wires and tubes thereby reducing fire risk and is stronger than traditional wallboard. It takes half the installation time of regular wallboard and does not require fittings such as bolts or nails. The company says that the sprayable plaster creates less waste, is easily recyclable and does not use paper. Not using paper also prevents any cases of black mould. The gypsum mix used can be modified to create a harder or softer surface depending on the desired room acoustics.

Saint-Gobain’s sales grow by 14.5% to Euro38.4bn so far in 2022

10 November 2022

France: Saint-Gobain’s sales grew by 14.5% on a like-for-like basis to Euro38.4bn in the first nine months of 2022 compared to Euro32.9bn in the same period in 2021. Strong sales growth was reported in all business lines although sales were driven in particular by the group’s High Performance Solutions business and its Asia-Pacific and North America regions.

The group noted that raw materials, freight and energy costs were growing, especially in Europe. It said that it had hedged around 80% of its natural gas and electricity purchasing needs for 2022 and around 60% for 2023. It has also been preparing continuity plans for its gas-consuming plants in Europe to ensure the flexibility of production to operate with less or alternative energy. The group said that its gypsum wallboard and construction chemicals production lines were “extremely flexible.”

By region the group said it had started the world’s first zero-carbon wallboard production at its Balsta plant in Sweden powered by biogas and ‘green’ electricity. In France it produced and marketed its Placo Infini 13 product, which is said is the first wallboard made from over 50% recycled gypsum.

Commerce Commission reports back on New Zealand wallboard market

10 August 2022

New Zealand: The Commerce Commission has said that builders have found it difficult to substitute alternative brands of gypsum wallboard because the building material is commonly specified by brand in building plans. Differences in consenting decisions by local government authorities and quantity-forcing rebates for wallboard have also been identified as making it harder for builders to source supplies. The regulator has been investigating general residential building supplies since November 2021 and made the comments as part of a draft report.
Commission chair Anna Rawlings said “Our preliminary view is that competition for the supply of key building supplies is not working as well as it could, and would be improved if it was easier for building products to be introduced and for competing suppliers to expand their business.”

The draft report has found certain brands of product have become ‘embedded’ in home-building practice in New Zealand and has recommended that the building regulatory system should include competition as a deliberate objective. It added that, in some circumstances, some types of rebates paid by established suppliers to merchants appeared to be reinforcing difficulties faced by competing products. The commission will now take comment on its draft report until September 2022. The final report will be published in December 2022.

Winstone Wallboards’ GIB product range is the main brand of wallboard used in the country. The company is reported to hold around a 95% share of the local market. Wallboard shortages have been reported since mid-2021.
