Saint-Gobain Placo launches laminated gypsum wallboard product
22 January 2021Spain: Saint-Gobain Placo has announced the launch of 4PRO Active’Air, a laminated gypsum wallboard for use in ceilings. The company says that the product improves the air quality of rooms by absorbing pollutants with its Active’Air technology. The boards also have tapered edges for a join-free fit.
The producer said, “4PRO Activ'Air is presented as the most complete and efficient construction solution for the creation of continuous ceilings with a smooth and perfect finish, thanks to its fine edges, which increase the resistance between the joints and reduce the risk of cracks. In addition, it increases productivity thanks to its easy and fast installation, and offers great flexibility in construction, since it adapts to any type of project in the realisation of both regular and rounded shapes.”
Spain: Saint-Gobain subsidiary Saint-Gobain Placo supplied and installed its Placo Hermetic watertight gypsum wallboard at the site of a solar-powered house. Interempresas News has reported that Austria-based Sunthalpy Engineering was responsible for the design and build. Following a successful trial, the developer disconnected the house from the electrical grid. It will run on direct and battery-stored solar energy.
Saint-Gobain Placo supplies gypsum wallboard for Madrid auditorium
10 December 2020Spain: Saint-Gobain subsidiary Saint-Gobain Placo has participated in the renovation of Madrid’s Julián Antonio Sánchez Municipal Auditorium in San Martín de la Vega with the supply of sound-absorbing gypsum wallboard solutions. The company says that it used its 12.5mm Rigitone 8/15/20 Super laminated boards on the walls of the building. It said it selected the product for its high acoustic performance, and improvement of indoor air quality. It added, “This improvement in acoustic absorption will allow the sound to be better distributed within the auditorium and, that reverberation does not occur in it, which will improve the comfort of the users.”
The company said, “The use of Rigitone 8/15/20 Super in the renovation work of the Julián Antonio Sánchez Municipal Auditorium has managed to improve the acoustics of the auditorium, create a healthy environment for the people who come to it, in addition to offering an aesthetic and design finish functional as well as modern, essential in this type of enclosure.”
Spain: The Port of Carboneras has reported the movement of a total of 350,000t of gypsum by importers and exporters in the first five months of 2020, up by 4% year-on-year from 337,000t over the corresponding period of 2019. Gypsum was the only product to experience an increase, with coal volumes over the period falling by 96% and cement volumes by 55% due to the impacts of the coronavirus outbreak on construction and other industries.
Port of Motril continues to export gypsum
29 June 2020Spain: The Port of Motril in Granada has resumed exporting gypsum from quarries in the province. A load of around 43,000t was despatched on the Desert Grace bulk carrier. Gypsum consignments from Motril started in late 2019 with two test shipments. The port hopes to export up to 0.4Mt/yr of raw gypsum.
France: Saint-Gobain says that its overall group activity fell to 60% of 2019 levels in April 2020 due to the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. Since then its level of activity surpassed 80% ‘at comparable working days, with large variations by market and country,’ according to Regulatory News Service. The group expects a ‘challenging’ second quarter 2020 before a recovery in the second half of the year. It continues to preserve cash and reduce costs.
In Europe the group reported that, by the end of May 2020, Nordic countries had almost reached 2019 levels. Germany and Eastern Europe were still seeing activity levels below those of 2019. The UK has seen activity levels progress by around 10%/week since a low point in mid-April 2020 when activity were at a ‘virtual standstill’, reaching around 70% of 2019 levels in the last week of May 2020.
In the group’s Middle East & Africa region activity levels surpassed 50% of 2019 levels since a low in mid-April 2020. In France, activity in distribution came close to the 2019 level in the last week of May 2020, but with big differences by region and brand. Spain and Italy are picking up gradually, but remain below the average level of the region. The Netherlands remains close to a normal level of activity, while the Middle East and Africa remain impacted to varying degrees.
North America has reported a ‘contrasting situation state by state,’ but has shown improvement since the low point of mid-April 2020. Activity in May 2020 moved closer to 2019 levels due to ‘significant’ volumes in exterior solutions and a rebound in gypsum volumes. In Latin America, despite the health situation remaining difficult, activity is picking up week after week, from 40% in mid-April 2020 to around 80% in May 2020 with a ramp-up in Brazil.
In Asia-Pacific sales have now reached 2019 levels following the gradual restart of all its production sites in China in March 2020. India remains ‘severely’ disrupted with the restart dependent on the relaxing of confinement measures. The situation is varied across South-East Asia with a rebound in Vietnam where activity has surpassed 2019 levels, but disruptions still relatively significant in Thailand and neighbouring countries.
Spain: Knauf España has signed an agreement with the Arquitectes per l’Arquitectura association with the aim of supporting sustainable and universal architecture. The partnership compliments other initiatives Knauf holds in the country with the Higher Council of Colleges of Architects of Spain, the Green Building Council, the College of Architects of Madrid, the Alejandro de la Sota Foundations and Architecture and Society.
Saint-Gobain Placo donates material for PPE production
23 April 2020Spain: France-based Saint-Gobain subsidiary Saint-Gobain Placo has donated plastic linings produced at its Quinto de Ebro laminated gypsum wallboard plant in Zaragoza to use in the production of personal protective equipment for medical professionals caring for coronavirus patients and those vulnerable to the virus. These include home-helpers who attend 250 elderly people in the Ribera Baja del Ebro region.
On 23 April 2020 Spain’s confirmed coronavirus case count was 213,024, with 22,157 deaths.
Spain: Saint-Gobain Placo’s Ebro Gelsa gypsum wallboard plant has achieved silver certification for operational excellence under the World Class Manufacturing (WCM) programme. Its score improved to 63 points from 53 two years previously. Auditors recognised ‘clear progress in the different WCM pillars in recent years’ and ‘a clear strategy going ahead,’ noting a ‘high degree of safety’ at the plant.
Knauf will show eco-sustainable boxes at Fruit Fair
04 October 2019Spain: Knauf will demonstrate its range of expanded polystyrene (EPS) and expanded polypropylene (EPP) boxes for the transportation of fresh and frozen fruit at the International Fair of the Fruit and Vegetable Sector in Madrid on 22 – 24 October. The boxes combine thermal insulation, lightness and shock absorption with 100% recyclability.
