China: Grenzebach BSH, a leading global supplier of process and production technologies, has received a ‘significant’ order from XINFA Group for the supply of two gypsum wallboard lines to XINFA’s existing production plant at its headquarters in Chiping-Liaocheng, Shandong Province. XINFA, one of the world’s leading aluminium manufacturers, will expand its gypsum wallboard production capacity to approximately 830,000m²/day (273Mm²/yr). This will make its plant the world’s largest, and is the second time that XINFA has relied on Grenzebach’s expertise.

XINFA Group runs its own coal-fired power plants to cover the high electricity requirements of its aluminium plants. Flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) gypsum is produced during the purification of the exhaust gases. Using Grenzebach equipment, XINFA has been able to recycle this gypsum to produce gypsum wallboard since 2021.

Robert Brier, CEO of Grenzebach BSH, said “The project demonstrates how close we are to our customers and our competitiveness, as well as our innovative strength in supplying manufacturing plants with a focus on sustainability aspects. By recycling the FGD gypsum, we are supporting our customer’s circular economy, while at the same time using the electricity generated and the waste heat from the power plants to operate the gypsum dryers and systems.”

Montenegro: UK-based private equity firm Chayton Capital has agreed to fund the feasibility study for the establishment of a joint public/private building materials production complex at the site of the Plejevlja energy hub. The complex will include a gypsum wallboard plant. Emerging Market Watch News has reported that the firm will also be involved in the modernisation of a coal-fired power plant at the site. The total budget for the project is Euro700m.

Romania: Belgium-based Etex invested Euro1m on upgrades to the logistics capacities of its Turceni gypsum wallboard plant and its Aghiresu plaster plant. It also started work on a Euro6m sludge drying unit at coal-fired power plant in Oltenia that will supply synthetic gypsum for use at Turceni, according to See News. The company operates locally under the Siniat Romania brand. It reported a 20% year-on-year rise in turnover to Euro59.6m in 2021.

Canada: Saint-Gobain has shared plans to install a US$3.19m waste heat recovery (WHR) system at its Vancouver gypsum wallboard plant in British Columbia. It has secured US$1.12m in funding from the provincial government’s CleanBC Industry Fund for the project. The producer says that the installation will increase the plant’s energy efficiency and reduce its CO₂ emission by 10%.

Saint-Gobain said “This project will help our company to maximise our positive impact for our customers and the communities where we do business, while minimising our environmental footprint. We thank the CleanBC programme for its support, and look forward to many more years of sustainable, state-of-the-art manufacturing in Vancouver.”

Bosnia & Herzegovina: China-based BNBM plans to build a 40Mm²/yr gypsum wallboard plant in a joint venture with Rudnik i Termoelektrana Ugljevik (RiTE Ugljevik). The new company will be called BNBM Eastern Europe and based at Ugljevik, where RiTE Ugljevik operates the coal-fired Ugljevik Power Plant. The project has an investment of Euro50m with BNBM contributing Euro45m towards the total. Construction is expected to take 18 months, although a start date is subject to the joint-venture meeting certain conditions to the satisfaction of its parent companies. RiTE Ugljevik is a subsidiary of the state-owned power company Elektroprivreda.

Romania: Etex Building Performance has announced plans to build a Euro6m sludge drying unit at Oltenia Energy Complex’s (OEC) Rovinari coal-fired power plant in Oltenia. The subsidiary of Belgium-based Etex will derive synthetic gypsum from the unit for use at its Turceni wallboard plant, according to Economica. It already operates a similar sludge drying unit at OEC’s Turceni coal-fired power plant.

Industrial director Gheorghe Budrugeac said "We count on the fact that both the OEC and the local and central authorities will understand the importance of the investment for the local community and the positive impact on the environment, therefore we expect no delays in the approval process."

Romania: Etex has proposed investing Euro6m at the Rovinari thermal power plant run by Oltenia Energy in order to secure supplies of flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) gypsum for its Turceni wallboard plant. It wants to build a desulphurisation unit at the power plant following falling energy production at the Turceni power plant, according to Economica. Etex is currently in negotiation with Oltenia Energy over the proposal.

India: BTL EPC, a division of engineering firm Shrachi Group, has been awarded a US$51m synthetic gypsum, limestone and coal handling equipment contract for Telangana State Power Generation Corporation’s proposed 5X800 MW Yadradri Thermal Power Station Thermal Power Station, according to the Economic Times newspaper. The contract includes the provision of a 21.8km-long conveyor.

India: Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHE) has been awarded two flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) system orders at a value of for just under US$350m two thermal power plants. The orders involve supply and installation of FGD systems for 13 coal based units at the 2600MW Korba STPS Stage I, II & Ill in Chhattisgarh and the 2100MW Ramagundam STPS Stage I & II in Telangana. BHE's scope of work includes design, engineering, civil works, supply, erection and commissioning of wet FGD system along with auxiliaries, including limestone and gypsum handling system and wet stack on a full engineering, procurement and construction basis. The orders follow a contract awarded in July 2019 to supply a FGD system for the Nabinagar Thermal Power Project.

India: Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHE) has been awarded the contract to supply emissions control systems, including a flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) system, at the Nabinagar Thermal Power Project. The project is a 4x250MW coal-fired power station being built by Bhartiya Rail Bijlee Company, a joint venture between NTPC and Indian Railways. BHE's scope of work includes design, engineering, civil works, supply, erection and commissioning of wet FGD system along with auxiliaries, including limestone and gypsum handling system and wet stack on a full engineering, procurement and construction basis.

Previously BHE installed a FGD system at Tata Power's Trombay Unit 8 in 2008. Including the latest order, BHE is presently executing FGD systems for 27 units of NTPC and its joint ventures.
