Solex Thermal Science acquires Econotherm

17 July 2023

Canada/UK: Canada-based Solex Thermal Science has purchased UK-based Econotherm for an undisclosed sum. The acquisition is intended to expand Solex’s capacity to help its customers reduce the primary energy consumed to produce industrial goods
Lowy Gunnewiek, the chief executive officer at Solex, said “We at Solex are passionate about working with customers to understand their operational needs. Today’s announcement broadens our overall business portfolio to provide our global client base with an even deeper suite of best-in-class, sustainable solutions that align with their respective environmental, social and governance strategies.”

Solex Thermal Science sells indirect heat exchange products for the heating, cooling and drying of free-flowing granular materials such as solid granules, pellets, beans, seeds and particles. Since 1989 the company has installed more than 900 heat exchangers in more than 50 countries worldwide with applications such as fertiliser, oilseeds and industrial materials such as minerals, sands, chemicals and polymers. More recently it has expanded into the energy-transition sector with collaborations on decarbonisation applications such as industrial waste heat recovery, concentrated solar power and carbon capture.

Econotherm manufactures heat pipe waste heat recuperators, economisers, pre-heaters, steam generators and steam condensers. The company’s patented super conductor heat pipe technology is used in a wide range of applications across many industrial sectors. Its references include supplying a gas to air heat pre-heater on a gypsum kettle exhaust to British Gypsum.

Georgia-Pacific’s Sweetwater West gypsum wallboard plant installs waste heat recovery system

12 December 2022

US: Georgia-Pacific’s Sweetwater West gypsum wallboard plant in Texas has completed an upgrade to its board-drying equipment. It has installed an Energy Optimization System (EOS), also known as a waste heat recovery unit, including new ducting, two new fans and a new exhaust stack, to an existing four-zone dryer. The newly upgraded system enables the collection of the waste exhaust from three zones of the plant and injects it into a fourth zone. This enables the burner in that zone to operate at a lower capacity. Around 2500t/yr of CO2 is saved in the process.

David Neal, vice president of Gypsum Operations for Georgia-Pacific said, “Advancements in energy savings and resource consumption reduction are goals toward which Georgia-Pacific works every single day.”

Georgia-Pacific started building a second wallboard plant next to its Sweetwater West plant in late 2020. The new 65Mm2/yr unit was scheduled to start production in late 2022.

Saint-Gobain to install waste heat recovery system at Vancouver gypsum wallboard plant

31 March 2022

Canada: Saint-Gobain has shared plans to install a US$3.19m waste heat recovery (WHR) system at its Vancouver gypsum wallboard plant in British Columbia. It has secured US$1.12m in funding from the provincial government’s CleanBC Industry Fund for the project. The producer says that the installation will increase the plant’s energy efficiency and reduce its CO2 emission by 10%.

Saint-Gobain said “This project will help our company to maximise our positive impact for our customers and the communities where we do business, while minimising our environmental footprint. We thank the CleanBC programme for its support, and look forward to many more years of sustainable, state-of-the-art manufacturing in Vancouver.”
