Indian government imposes five-year anti-dumping duty on calcined gypsum from five countries
07 January 2022India: The government has imposed an anti-dumping duty on imports of calcined gypsum from China, Iran, Oman, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. The Press Trust of India newspaper has reported that the duty will remain in place for the duration of the five-year period ending on 31 December 2026. The Commerce Ministry said that the duty’s aim is to guard local suppliers against the impacts of below-cost imports in accordance with World Trade Organisation (WTO) regulations.
India: The Industries and Commerce Department of the Andhra Pradesh state government has granted Saint-Gobain India an extension to the duration a package of financial incentives will be available for the construction of its new gypsum wallboard plant at Atchutapuram, Visakhapatnam. The company now has until June 2022 to commence commercial production, according to the Hindu newspaper. The producer’s total investment in the project is US$268m. When finally commissioned, the plant will employ 450 locals. It will also manufacture float glass.
Saint-Gobain India also received permission from the department to change its name to Saint-Gobain Industries.
Omani gypsum exports fall slightly in 2020
17 February 2021Oman: Gypsum exports fell by 2% year-on-year to 8.81Mt in 2020 from 9.01Mt in 2020. This has been attributed to weaker demand in key markets caused by a global economic slowdown and the coronavirus pandemic, according to the Oman Daily Observer newspaper. However, industry figures remain optimistic about the future for the sector given the country’s continued position as the world’s largest exporter of gypsum. In 2020 the country exported 2.49Mt of gypsum to Vietnam, 1.49Mt to India, 1.41Mt to Bangladesh, 0.8Mt to Indonesia, 0.78Mt to Japan, 0.49Mt to South Africa and 0.37Mt to South Korea.
USG Boral India launches Sheetrock gypsum wallboard

Saint-Gobain opens coronavirus hospital in Gujarat
01 September 2020India: France-based Saint-Gobain has opened a 600-bed coronavirus hospital in a converted office building in Surat, Gujarat. The total building time for the project was just 17 days, which the company said was ‘due to the choice of materials, namely gypsum wallboard over bricks and mortar.’ The Hindu BusinessLine newspaper has reported that the company used 4830m2 of gypsum wallboard to build partition walls throughout the eight-storey building, in accordance with World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines.
Saint-Gobain’s sales recover in June 2020
04 August 2020France: Saint-Gobain’s says its sales for June 2020 rose by 3.7% on a like-for-like basis as markets recovered from the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. Its sales fell by 12.3% year-on-year on a like-for-like basis to Euro17.8bn in the first half of 2020 from Euro21.7bn in the same period in 2019. Its earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) decreased by 32.4% to Euro1.64bn from Euro2.42bn.
“In a macroeconomic and health environment which remains affected by uncertainties, our earnings growth in June and outlook for the third quarter suggest that our operating income for second-half 2020 will improve significantly on first-half 2020,” said Pierre-André de Chalendar, chairman and chief executive officer (CEO) of Saint-Gobain. He added that the group’s portfolio of products, including those in energy-efficiency and renovation markets, positioned it to benefit from national and European stimulus plans supporting energy saving initiatives.
The group noted a 19.2% year-on-year sales decrease in the second quarter of 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, with very different situations between countries and markets. Most of its business segments reported growth in June 2020 with the exception of Asia-Pacific, where the Indian market held the division back. Gypsum sales helped deliver ‘robust growth’ in the US and Canada in June 2020. Strong growth in gypsum was reported in Brazil for the first half of 2020. Chinese sales in gypsum benefitted in the second quarter of 2020 from a new plaster plant, which originally opened in 2019, reaching full production capacity. The group’s High Performance Solutions division reported positive trends from its external thermal insulation solutions (ETICS) products in the second quarter of 2020.
Report forecasts 11% year-on-year gypsum export growth
20 March 2020Oman: Zawawi Minerals has published a report in which it forecasts 11% year-on-year growth in gypsum exports, to 10.0Mt in 2020 from 9.00Mt in 2019. The report notes that Oman’s consistent supply of gypsum makes it the most important supplier to the Asian and South/East African regions. It contrasts the fitness of the Omani gypsum sector for exports with that of Pakistan, where bilateral trade with neighbouring India has been suspended since 7 August 2019.
Algeria/India: France-based plaster production unit designer, manufacturer and installer Alphaplatre has announced its successful delivery of two AP400 vertical kilns to gypsum wallboard plants in Algeria and India. It says that each kiln has a capacity of 400t/day of gypsum.
Telangana State Power Generation Corporation awards gypsum and coal handling contract to BTL EPC
14 February 2020India: BTL EPC, a division of engineering firm Shrachi Group, has been awarded a US$51m synthetic gypsum, limestone and coal handling equipment contract for Telangana State Power Generation Corporation’s proposed 5X800 MW Yadradri Thermal Power Station Thermal Power Station, according to the Economic Times newspaper. The contract includes the provision of a 21.8km-long conveyor.
MoistTech appoints manager and technical staff for India
29 October 2019India: US-based moisture measurement specialist MoistTech has deployed a manager and technical staff to India to liaise directly with its customers there. The new branch will take up all customer support functions previously enacted by Earthtekniks.
